Over 7,000 people visited Hearst Plaza on Sunday, September 21st as Lincoln Center celebrated the International Day of Peace through a unique rental event, the “Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace”. New Yorkers and tourists alike eagerly lined up to inscribe their wishes for peace and love on paper lanterns and float them in the Paul Milstein Reflecting Pool on Hearst Plaza. Live music and cultural performances accompanied the day’s events as guests came and went. The culminating evening ceremony was highlighted by an address from Her Holiness Shinso Ito (the head priest of Shinnyo-en) and performances by New York City Ballet dancers Wendy Whelan and Craig Hall, trumpeter Alphonso Horne , students from The Juilliard School, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and the Shinnyo Taiko drummers. Per Shinnyo-en, this event is “meant to inspire a spirit of harmony and compassion that transcends all boundaries of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, and religious tradition - and empower people to create a stronger force for peace in our families, our communities, and our environment.”
